Hokusai's 46-figure "Thirty-Six Views of Tomitake," which Hokusai began drawing at the age of 71, was a huge hit, coupled with the belief in Mt. Fuji at the time. The most famous of these works. It has surpassed the category of Hokusai's works and can be said to be one of the greatest masterpieces in the history of Japanese art. Since "off the coast of Kanagawa" means off the coast of Kanagawa, the boarding town of the Tōkaidō, this painting depicts the view seen from the top of present-day Tokyo Bay. What you can see between the waves is a pushboat carrying fresh fish from Boso and Izu to Edo, and it seems as if they are being tossed around by the big waves. Facing the powerful rising waves is Mt. Fuji standing neatly in its proper form. It expresses a majestic scenery by contrasting stillness and motion.
Hokusai chose indigo as the dye to draw waves, and he was particularly particular about the darkest part of blue. At that time, it used the imported pigment "velo indigo", which was still difficult to obtain. For this aloha shirt, we adopted an indigo pigment close to the one used by Hokusai, and inherited that obsession.
What is the "National Treasure of Japan"?
Focusing on the painters of the Edo period, when Japanese culture and art expanded further, the works of the masters are reproduced on a canvas called aloha shirts, reviving the passion embedded in the designs that Japan is proud of in the world to the present day. This series, which began with a collaboration with Katsushika Hokusai's work, adds new artists and takes on the next development. © THE SUMIDA HOKUSAI MUSEUM
