During the Ansei period in which this work was written, the Chinese biographical historical novel "Shuiyuden" was a favorite read among the common people. Resembling the heroes who appear there, the work depicting nine kabuki actors is "Tosei Suikoden" (Tosei Suikoden). The film consists of a trilogy of Shochiku Ume trilogy of Kabuki actors who were popular at the time. He drew it with a lot of personality to resemble the characters of the Han people who lived in the Renjun in the novel, and gained popularity.
This ukiyo-e painting was created by Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni, the third generation), who was born in the 6th year of Tenmei (1786) to a family of lumber wholesalers in Edo Honsho. His paintings of beauty are distinctive and resonate with the Issei. In addition, the reputation of the actor's paintings was so high that it is said that he surpassed his mentor, the first Utagawa Toyokuni. With an extraordinary desire to create works, he left the most works of any ukiyo-e artist of the time, and it is said that the number of works is said to have reached more than 10,000.
