This work depicts a thunder god beating a drum on his back in a swirling dark cloud. Hokusai depicts the fiercely swirling black clouds with scattered black splashes, and makes a bold expression by depicting the light of the lightning bolt running through the sky in an instant with two red streaks of light. Hokusai, who tried to paint all kinds of things in the universe, worked on this work in his last years. Although it can be seen from the falling article that it was painted when he was 88 years old, he does not feel any decline at all, but rather strongly feels Hokusai's never-ending energy.
In this "Thunder God Diagram", ink was used for the black part representing the black cloud, so this aloha shirt also follows Hokusai's work and is slid up using "ink" pigment when printing.
Japanese Design: National Treasure of Japan
Focusing on the painters of the Edo period, when Japanese culture and art expanded further, the works of the masters are reproduced on a canvas called aloha shirts, reviving the passion embedded in the designs that Japan is proud of in the world to the present day. This series, which began with a collaboration with Katsushika Hokusai's work, adds new artists and takes on the next development.
